Az első önálló autóbuszt, az ÁMG–407-est 1959-ben mutatta be a gyár, amely nagyrészt az Ikarus 31-es gépészetére alapult. A mindössze hét méter hosszú kisbuszt Csepel alvázra építették, a meghajtásáról Csepel D414-es dízelmotor gondoskodott. A busz lámpatestei szintén az Ikarus 31-esről származtak, az indexek pedig az Ikarus 620-asokról lehetnek ismerősek. A járműből mintegy száz darabot gyártott az ÁMG, elsősorban a vidéki Mávaut-ok vásároltak belőle, ahol bányászjáratokra kerültek, innen ered a típus „bányászbusz” beceneve is.
